What is diabetes?

Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) is a class of metabolic diseases marked by high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). Most of the food you eat is broken down into sugar (glucose) and released into the blood stream. This causes your blood sugar to rise, which signals your pancreas to release insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas which usually controls blood glucose levels. With diabetes, your body either doesn't make enough insulin or can't use the insulin it makes as well as it should.

Symptoms

Diabetes symptoms vary depending on how much your blood sugar is elevated. Not everyone that has pre-diabetes or Type 2 diabetes experiences symptoms. With Type 1 diabetes, symptoms tend to develop quickly and tend to be more severe.
